At the end of the school year, teachers get a lot of cards. Most say "thank you for everything", which is lovely and also blurs into all the others. The ones a teacher actually keeps name a specific thing: a moment, a change in the child, something only that family would know to say.
Here is how to write one worth keeping, whether the words are coming from you or from your child.
From a parent
You have the perspective to see what the year did for your child. Use it.
- "Thank you for a wonderful year. [Child] went from dreading reading to asking for one more chapter every night. That is down to you."
- "We have watched [child] grow in confidence all year, and we know how much of that is you. Thank you for caring as much as you do."
- "You made [child] feel seen this year, and that matters more than any grade. We are so grateful. Have a lovely, well-earned summer."
From a child (or written with them)
Simple and honest is perfect. Help them find the specific bit.
- "Thank you for making maths actually fun. I did not think that was possible. Have a great summer."
- "You were my favourite teacher because you were always kind and you never made me feel silly for asking questions."
- "Thank you for believing I could do it even when I did not. I will miss being in your class."
For a teacher who went above and beyond
Some years, a teacher does something that genuinely changes things. Say so plainly.
- "This was a hard year for our family, and your patience and kindness made all the difference to [child]. We will never forget it. Thank you."
- "You did not just teach [child] this year, you looked out for them. As a parent, that is everything. Thank you, truly."
Keep it about them, not the gift
A heartfelt line beats an expensive present every time, and most teachers will tell you the card is the bit they keep. If you are adding a gift, the card still does the real work. One specific, genuine sentence is worth more than a paragraph of "thanks for all your hard work".
A card that stands out from the pile
If you want the card itself to be a keepsake, The Card Genie can turn a photo, a class drawing, or a snap from the school year into a personalised card you can print and hand over on the last day. A small, lovely thing for someone who gave your child a whole year.
Make a thank-you card for a teacher they will actually keep.
