Golf is the most written-about hobby in the card aisle and the worst served. Walk into any shop and you will find the same four jokes: a hole in one, a lost ball, too many rounds, and something about the nineteenth hole.
They persist because golf is unusually easy to signal and unusually hard to write about. The signalling is a club and a flag. The writing requires knowing what a golfer is actually like, which is a much narrower and funnier thing.
What is actually true about golfers
Three things, and every good golf card sits on at least one.
The time. A round is four hours plus travel plus the bit afterwards, and it usually starts at an hour that makes no sense to anybody else in the house. Golf is the only hobby where the joke about the duration is also the joke about the marriage.
The handicap. Golf is the rare sport with an official, numerical, publicly recorded measure of how good somebody is, and golfers think about theirs constantly. It is a gift to card writing. Nobody in any other hobby carries a number around that they will defend, explain and blame the weather for.
The equipment. No golfer has ever believed their clubs are the correct clubs. There is always one more purchase that will fix it. This is universal, it is expensive, and everybody in the family already knows about it.
Lines that use the real material
On the time:
- "Happy birthday. Enjoy your day, which I assume starts at 6am somewhere in Cheshire."
- "Another year of you leaving the house in the dark on a Saturday to hit a ball into a pond. Would not change you."
On the handicap:
- "Happy birthday to a man whose handicap has been coming down any week now since 2019."
- "Here is to the only number in your life you can quote instantly and will not explain honestly."
On the equipment:
- "Happy birthday. I have not bought you a driver, because the last three did not work either."
- "Whatever is in the bag, it is not the bag's fault. Have a lovely day."
For someone who has just taken it up: a much better card than any of the above, and almost nobody sends it. Taking up golf as an adult means being publicly bad at something in front of strangers, which deserves more credit than it gets.
- "You have taken up the one sport designed to make grown adults furious in a nice cardigan. Good luck. Genuinely."
- "New clubs, new personality. See you in four hours."
The two crossovers worth knowing
Retirement. More golf cards are really retirement cards, and the joke writes itself so easily that it usually gets written badly. "Enjoy the golf" is the single most common line in a retirement card and it is a way of saying nothing. If the golf is genuinely the point, be specific about what changes: the tee times they can finally take, the Tuesday morning round, the fact that nobody can ring them. Retirement card messages works through the wider problem with the format.
Father's Day and dad birthdays. Golf is the default dad hobby in card shops, which is exactly why a golf card for a dad has to work harder. If your dad plays, do not write the card the shop would have written. Write the one about him and the course he plays, and see personalised birthday card ideas for dad if the golf is the easy answer rather than the true one.
One rule about the golf joke
Golfers do not find golf funny in the way non-golfers do. The outsider joke is that the sport is slow and silly. The insider joke is that it is genuinely hard and they are genuinely bad at it, and they are far more comfortable with the second.
Write from inside if you can. "Four hours to be disappointed by yourself" is a golfer's joke. "Hitting a ball with a stick" is somebody who does not play, and they can tell.
Where a picture beats a paragraph
The specific thing about a golfer is that they have a fantasy version of themselves that is very easy to picture: the Sunday leader, the winning putt, the ridiculous celebration. They will never say it out loud, which is precisely why it works as a card.
With The Card Genie you upload one photo and describe the scene, and the genie paints them into it. Your dad in the winner's blazer. Your mate holding a trophy on a green with a crowd behind them. The preview is free and watermarked, so you see it before you pay, then send it by WhatsApp, email or a link.
Image cards are £1.79 and a short animated one with sound is £3.49, with a £4.49 print add-on that comes in a blank envelope carrying a code that plays the animated version when scanned. Make one before their next round.
FAQs
What do you write in a birthday card for a golfer?
Use one of the three things that are true of every golfer: the hours, the handicap or the equipment. A line about their handicap coming down any week now will land better than any pun about a hole in one, because it is about them rather than the sport.
Are golf puns worth using?
One on the front is fine. Inside, the shop puns are so common that they read as the card having been chosen rather than written. The insider joke, that the game is hard and they are cheerfully bad at it, is funnier and more affectionate.
What do you write for someone who has just started golfing?
Credit the nerve it takes. Adults who take up golf are choosing to be visibly bad at something in front of strangers for months. A card that finds that admirable and slightly ridiculous beats one that pretends they will be good at it.
Is "enjoy the golf" a good retirement card line?
It is the most common line in the format and it says nothing. If golf really is the point, name what changes: the weekday tee times, the round nobody can interrupt, thirty years of squeezing it into weekends being over.
